Mathematician Spotlight

Attention all students!
Most of you have probably seen the Mathematician Spotlight on the board in my room.  Each month I will post a famous mathematician and a quote by that mathematician.  If you should choose to complete this assignment, the requirements are listed below.
Here where you should post your three facts (in addition to writing them on the paper with your paragraph).
Even though this has been posted since the beginning of the year, this will be your Mathematician Spotlight for October - Due by the end of October.

Can't wait to read what you discover!!

Geometry Unit 2 Vocabulary

Geometry Peoples:
Congratulations! You survived your first test! It didn't hurt that bad, did it?  Here is your vocabulary for Unit 2 in case you were double (and triple) checking your answers on your test (like a good math student) and didn't finish copying them down.
**Remember: They go on page 39 and also on your Personal Word Wall alphabetically. **

Extra Help

Happy Monday everybody!
We have a super busy week ahead of us, so here we go!!

A lot of you have started to come see me when you need a little extra help, which is GREAT! As you (and I) start getting busier, I want to make sure that I am completely free to help you if you take the time to come get extra help.  So I will post my extra help availability for the week here and in my room.  Here's what you need to know:
  • Extra help in the AM is from 7:40 (ish) until 7:55.
  • Extra help in the PM is from 2:50 - 4:00.
  • Extra help is as needed and you are free to leave when you are done!
  • I am also happy to write passes if you need proof to show your parent/coach.
If you know you need some extra help, but your schedule doesn't fit with mine PLEASE let me know and I'm sure we can find a time to work together!  You are also welcome to come get help during lunch as long as you will excuse me talking with my mouth full :)

This week:
Monday - AM
Tuesday - AM, PM
Wednesday - AM, PM
Thursday - AM, PM
Friday - AM

We are getting into the semester and have some quizzes under our belts and some tests coming up, so please come see me if you need help.  Extra help could just be help on your homework or it could be corrections on assignments, quizzes or tests. (Remember you can correct all assignments in extra help and correct or retake all tests and quizzes in extra help.)  The sooner you come in and get caught up, the easier it will be!!

Let's have a great week!

Algebra II Vocabulary

In case you were busy double and triple checking your work on your quiz today and didn't finish copying down your words for your crossword puzzle, here they are:

Notebook Checks This Week!!

Happy first full week of school!

Since I finally get to have all of you in the classroom for 5 whole days this week, we are starting our notebook checks!  Remember Notebooks are due once a week and the due date is based on your period number.  The regular schedule is as follows:
Monday - 1st Period
Tuesday - 2nd Period
Wednesday - 3rd Period
Thursday - 4th Period
Friday - 5th and 6th Periods
Some weeks will need to be adjusted because of days we don't have school, but I will make sure to remind you if your notebook will be due on a non-usual day!

Things to remember for notebook checks:
  • I will grade assignments (homework, classwork, bellwork and activities).
  • I will check for notes.
  • All ungraded pages are fair game.  - I will start grading from whatever page I left off on last time.  (Check your table of contents for which pages have been graded!)
  • Papers that are not taped/glued in will not be graded.
  • I will also give you a notebook grade based on two things: completed table of contents and pages glued/taped in on correct pages.
  • Crossword Puzzles won't be graded until the notebook check after your test, but make sure they are done on test day!
Make sure you check out the tab for your class to update your Table of Contents!!

Folding, Taping and Gluing - Oh My!

Happy Notebook Set-Up Day!!!

I know today's class was fast and furious with lots of numbering, folding, taping, etc. so I wanted to make sure that you had all the directions from class today in case you missed something.

Remember:
  • Number your pages in the bottom outside corners (at least through 50) with odd numbers on the right side and even numbers on the left side.
  • Number your table of contents through 198 with only 25 numbers per page
    • page 1: 1-25
    • page 2: 26-50
    • page 3: 51-75
    • page 4: 76-100
    • page 5: 101-125
    • page 6: 126-150
    • page 7: 151-175
    • page 8: 176-198
  • Decorate your cover and be creative! You are going to have to look at it all year, so you might as well make it nice to look at.  Make sure you put your info in the top right hand corner.
    • Your Name
    • Your Course - Period #
    • Mrs. Whitlow
    • Tacoma Baptist High School
  • When putting pages in your notebook:
    • Don't fold completely in half, leave the title hanging out!
    • Tape double sided copies with two little pieces of tape at the top of the paper
    • Glue single sided copies
  • Your Personal Word Wall should be on pages 12-15 and look like:

(The first line was 3.25 inches from the top of the paper and the second line 3.25 inches below that.)

Hope that helps! I can't wait to finish up notebooks tomorrow!!

Welcome Back!!

Good afternoon!

I was so happy to have students back in class today! It was great to meet a lot of new people and start a new school year.

Don't forget to have your parents sign your signature slip and bring the slip and your syllabus back to class tomorrow!!

Today we talked about a lot of things, including materials you will need for the year.  The biggest thing is that you will need a 100 sheet composition notebook by Thursday.  We will use this notebook for the entire school year so make sure it has 100 sheets and it must be a composition book.  (If you will have trouble getting one by Thursday, please let me know so we can work something out!)

We also talked about calculators.  The need for calculators varies a little bit by class.

Geometry Students - You will need a scientific calculator. They are pretty much all the same and there should be some good back to school deals going on.  You are more than welcome to use a graphing calculator if you have one!

Algebra II & Calculus Students - You will need a graphing calculator.  I am going to recommend a TI-83 or TI-84 calculator.  They are a little pricey, but shop around! There are some good back to school deals going on and maybe some good used calculators out there.  If you have a different graphing calculator, you are more than welcome to use it!

Have a great day!
